Overview

A Short-Stay Type C Schengen Visa for Sports Events allows non-EU citizens to travel to Greece to participate in or attend sports competitions, tournaments, championships, training camps, or sporting events. This visa permits stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

This visa is suitable for:

  • Athletes, coaches, team staff, or referees participating in sports events.
  • Sports officials, journalists, or sponsors attending competitions.
  • Teams or delegations traveling for tournaments or training.

Application Process:

  • All applications must be submitted in person at a Greece Visa Application Centre (VAC) in London, Edinburgh, or Manchester, with a pre-booked appointment.
  • Minors under 18 years old must be accompanied by both parents, or provide notarized consent if traveling with one parent or alone.
  • Applications can be submitted from 6 months up to 15 calendar days before the intended travel date.

Processing Time:

  • Standard Processing: Up to 15 calendar days.
  • Consultation Requirement: Certain nationalities may require up to 3 weeks for additional checks with other Schengen states.
  • Further Review: Some applications may need up to 45 calendar days for detailed processing.
  • Applications from Manchester or Edinburgh: Add 5 working days to account for transfer to London VAC.
  • High-demand periods: Apply well in advance to avoid delays, especially during peak periods.

Documents Required

Basic Requirements:

  • Visa Application Form: Fully completed and signed.
  • Photographs: Two recent, high-resolution, passport-sized photos (3.5 x 4 cm) following photo specifications.
  • Passport: Must be:
    • Valid for at least three months beyond the return date.
    • Issued within the last 10 years.
    • Contain at least two blank pages.
    • Accompanied by copies of the identification page and previous Schengen visas.
  • UK Residency: A UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Sports Event-Specific Documents:

  • Official Invitation Letter from the Sports Organiser:
    • Issued by the event organizer, club, or sports federation on official letterhead (stamped and signed), confirming:
      • Applicant’s full name and role (e.g., athlete, coach, referee, or team staff).
      • Event name, type (e.g., tournament, competition, training camp), and dates.
      • Location and venue details.
      • Confirmation of participation or attendance.
    • If available, confirmation of event registration or entry passes.
  • Proof of Participation:
    • Competition registration form, tournament entry confirmation, or event passes.
    • Schedule or program showing applicant’s name and role.
    • If applicable, a contract with a sports organization or club detailing participation.
  • Team or Group Travel:
    • Team list or group participation confirmation from the sports authority.
    • Official letter from the sports federation confirming group travel (if traveling with a team).

Proof of Finance:

  • Applicant’s Bank Statements:
    • Personal UK bank statement for the last three months, showing regular transactions and a minimum balance of £40 per day of stay.
    • Closing balance not older than 30 days from the application date.
  • If Sponsored by a Sports Organization or Club:
    • Sponsorship letter from the club, federation, or sponsor confirming coverage of expenses.
    • Sponsor’s bank statement (last three months).
    • Proof of relationship (if the sponsor is a relative).

Proof of Accommodation:

  • Accommodation Proof: Hotel reservation or a confirmation letter from the event organizer providing lodging.
  • The confirmation should include applicant’s name, dates of stay, and accommodation details.

Proof of Travel:

  • Confirmed Round-Trip Travel Tickets:
    • Detailed itinerary covering the entire stay.
    • Fully paid return tickets showing entry and exit from the Schengen area.
  • If Traveling by Car:
    • Driver’s license (copy of both sides).
    • Car registration document and insurance copy.
    • Return tickets (ferry or Eurotunnel) including car registration details.

Travel Insurance (Mandatory):

  • Travel insurance policy copy showing:
    • Applicant’s full name.
    • Coverage for all Schengen states.
    • Minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for:
      • Medical emergencies
      • Hospitalization costs
      • Repatriation (including death)
  • Insurance must be valid for the entire duration of stay.
  • Bank-insured applicants must obtain a bank letter of confirmation.

Proof of Current Occupation:

  • For Employees:
    • Employment letter, dated within 30 days, confirming:
      • Position and date of recruitment.
      • Salary details.
      • Approved leave of absence.
    • Last three months’ payslips.
  • For Self-Employed Individuals:
    • Latest tax return form.
    • Self-employment confirmation letter from an accountant, solicitor, or business bank manager (dated within 30 days).
    • Certificate of Incorporation if applicable.
  • For Students:
    • Enrolment letter from school, college, or university (dated within 30 days) confirming attendance.
  • For Retired or Unemployed Individuals:
    • Pension slip or official letter from the Job Centre (dated within 30 days).

Additional Requirements for Minors:

  • Birth Certificate: Full unabridged version showing both parents’ names (translated if required).
  • Parental Consent: A notarized consent letter from both parents if the minor is traveling alone or with one parent.
  • Parents’ Identification: Copies of both parents’ passports (bio and signature pages).
  • Proof of Guardianship: If applicable, legal documents confirming custody or guardianship.

Photo Specifications


Applicants must submit two recent passport-sized photographs that meet the following specifications:

  • Size: 3.5 x 4 cm (approximately 1.2 x 1.6 inches).
  • Background: Light, plain background (white or off-white) to ensure clear facial visibility.
  • Colour and Quality: High-resolution, in colour, and printed on normal photographic paper (camera print), preferably non-glossy.
  • Pose: Full face, facing forward with forehead and ears visible.
  • Expression: Neutral, with a closed mouth (no smile).
  • Accessories: No sunglasses, hats, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Age of Photo: Taken within the last 6 months from the date of application.
